Developing a successful business strategy requires more than just knowledge of various frameworks and theories. It demands a systematic approach that bridges the gap between abstract visions and practical implementation. Stanford professors Jesper Sørensen and Glenn Carroll offer a solution through systemic thinking, which helps in formulating, developing, and managing a strategy effectively.

The traditional way of thinking about strategies often falls short due to a lack of disciplined reasoning. Despite having access to diverse business strategies and case studies, many executives struggle to apply them in everyday decision-making, leading to a sense of underconfidence in their strategic plans.

To address this challenge, a constructive system of thinking is essential. This system involves three key stages: visualization, logical formalization, and constructive argumentation. By following these stages, business leaders can translate insights into actionable strategic plans.

Visualizing with strategy maps is the first stage, where a diagram is created to connect ideas, resources, and actions. This exercise helps in articulating and revising strategic arguments, leading to a deeper understanding of the connections between concepts.

The second stage involves formalizing logic for the strategy, where the argument is translated into a formal logical representation. This step ensures that the assumptions made for the strategy are true and coherent, moving from abstract ideas to concrete reality.

Finally, the third stage focuses on constructive argumentation, where the strategy is open to debate and discussion. Encouraging constructive arguments leads to better decisions, stakeholder buy-in, and a shift in how people perceive a situation.

Developing skills in logical reasoning, argumentation, and strategy assessment is crucial for business strategists. These skills are often overlooked in traditional business education but are essential for thinking systematically about strategies.

By incorporating these systematic thinking approaches into their skillset, business leaders can enhance their strategic acumen and make more informed decisions.
