Congratulations on your promotion to your first executive level job! This is an exciting time in your career, but it also comes with a set of challenges that you need to be aware of. As someone who has coached and worked with numerous new executives over the years, I have identified three common pitfalls that you should be mindful of as you take on this new role.

The first pitfall to avoid is running without reflecting. When you step into an executive position, you may feel like you need to be everywhere at once, dealing with a multitude of issues and people. It’s important to remember that not every issue is yours to solve. Take the time to reflect on what truly requires your attention and focus on those areas. By incorporating regular reflection into your routine, you can improve your decision-making process and avoid reacting impulsively to every situation that arises.

The second pitfall to watch out for is still being the go-to person. While being the go-to person may have served you well in the past, it is not a sustainable strategy as an executive. You need to shift from being the one who handles everything to building a team of capable individuals who can share the workload. By delegating tasks and empowering your team members, you can free up your time to focus on high-impact activities that will drive success for the organization.

Lastly, avoid staying on your functional island and failing to play a bigger game. As an executive, your role is to prioritize the success of the entire organization, not just your own department. Make the shift from a “me” mindset to an “us as the leadership team” mindset, and work collaboratively with your peers to achieve long-term enterprise success. By taking a step back and looking at the bigger picture, you can make a more significant impact as a leader.

In conclusion, navigating your new executive role can be challenging, but by being aware of these common pitfalls and taking proactive steps to avoid them, you can set yourself up for success. Reflect on your priorities, empower your team, and embrace a collaborative mindset to thrive in your new position. Good luck on your journey as a new executive!
